“Died Because of What She Didn’t Know.”

Jeanne Ann Clery, 19-year-old student at Lehigh University (Bethlehem, PA), was raped, tortured, sodomized, and murdered in her own dorm room during the early morning hours of April 5, 1986.  Her killer was a fellow student, one whom she had never met, and who also lived on campus.  He had snuck into the dormitory building through three propped-open doors which should have been locked.

Jeanne’s parents claim that their daughter “died because of what she didn’t know.”  What they mean is that Jeanne, just like the rest of the student body, had never been informed of the possible dangers that can occur on campus.  Crime committed on college campuses is “one of the best-kept secrets in the country.”  Because of this failure to inform students everywhere, Jeanne Ann Clery’s parents, Connie and Howard Clery, established Security On Campus, Inc. and an act in her name was proposed and signed in 1990 - the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, or simply, the Clery Act.

Security On Campus, Inc. - Connie and Howard Clery’s national (nonprofit) organization dedicated to the prevention of criminal violence at colleges and to assisting campus victims nationwide.

The Clery Act - requires all colleges and universities that participate in federal financial aid programs to keep and disclose information about crime on and near their respective campuses.

REQUIREMENTS:

- Institutions across the United States must publish and distribute their Annual Campus Security Report to current and prospective students and employees and provide notice of the report!

- A descriptive “crime log” must be kept to record all reports and warnings must be given in good time to ensure safety of students and employees.
